| Dorm Contraband! Do Not Bring It To Campus! |
Since we are always writing about the must have college dorm essentials, the dorm411 team thought it would be interesting to make a list of those items students SHOULD NOT bring to their dorm this fall, dorm room contraband. These items made the top ten:
- PETS: While we realize there are a few colleges and universities out there with pet friendly housing and we applaud these trend setters, the vast majority will not allow you to bring your family pet so do FIDO a favor and leave him at home.
- HOT PLATES OR TOASTER OVENS: Do they even make these anymore? A complete fire hazard, definitely not dorm smart! Use your dorm microwave or residence hall kitchen!
- WEAPONS: Leave your guns and knives at home please... including your paint ball and stun guns! Check with your campus police to see what security products you can legally use for protection at your college or university campus, like pepper spray.
- EXPENSIVE JEWELRY: We all like it and want to keep it! If you choose not to heed this advice and bring it, at least invest in a good dorm safe!
- LARGE SUMS OF CASH: You may as well donate it to charity and take the tax deduction because if it’s stolen, how do you prove it was yours? "Duh... it had a picture of Benjamin Franklin on it officer... honest..."
- LARGE SCREEN TV: OK… we’ve seen this A LOT! Definitely not dorm smart or roommate friendly. Dorm size your electronics!
- FULL SIZE APPLIANCES: Believe it or not, every now and then we see more senior students attempting to hide a fully stocked, full size refrigerator in their dorm room. You have to wonder how they managed to get it past their RA? And while you may really like coffee, a 24 cup coffeemaker is out of the question. Can you really drink that much coffee before your 8:00 a.m. class? Dorm size your appliances!
- ILLEGAL DRUGS OR ALCOHOL: Seriously, do we need to say more?
- CANDLES AND INCENSE: Let’s keep the dorms fire free! Get some air freshener and some soft dorm lighting to set the mood!
- BOYFRIEND OR GIRLFRIEND: OMG! While you may miss each other and we feel your pain, it really isn’t appropriate or fair to your roommate to move your boyfriend or girlfriend into your dorm room, especially when they aren’t even enrolled!
