After thirteen years of hard work, you deserve to celebrate your big day with friends and family! If you think you can't afford to throw a successful yet inexpensive graduation party... think again! To help plan the perfect celebration, we've provided a few inexpensive graduation party ideas.

    Inexpensive Graduation Party Invites

If you want to conserve your money, try making your own invitations. You can also use free e-card websites to send out invites such as punchbowl.com, evite.com, or even create a facebook event. Not only are these at no cost to you, but you will also be able to keep an easy access, organized list of who will be attending your graduation party.

    Inexpensive Graduation Party Venues

Choosing the right location for your graduation party is dependent on the number of guests on your invite list. If you want to have a more intimate party with just a few close friends and family members, avoid the hassle by going out to eat at one of your favorite restaurants. If you want to invite the majority of your graduating class, you may want to consider hosting the party at your house, free of charge. If weather permits, see if there are any local parks where you would be allowed to host your graduation party.

    Inexpensive Graduation Party Decorations

Instead of spending countless dollars on expensive, customized decorations, head to your local discount or dollar store or shop online party stores such as orientaltrading.com to find reasonably priced items to make your party look great. Find napkins, plates, cups, utensils, confetti, streamers, balloons, table cloths, banners, and more in your school colors to make decorating your party easy and affordable. If you want, you can make your own signs, banners, or napkin holders to personalize. Be sure to set up pictures or even a quick slideshow of yourself and your many accomplishments throughout the years!

    Inexpensive Graduation Party Foods

Finger foods are one of the best graduation party food choices. They are budget friendly, easy to make, and delicious! Make up some chicken wraps, vegetable trays, or chips and dip. Many restaurants offer party trays for a reasonable price as well, so be sure to call around to your favorite local food joints! If your party is located outside, grilling some hamburgers and hotdogs is also a great option. Make sure to have cool beverages available to your party guests by filling up some coolers with plenty of ice and drinks beforehand. If you do not want to purchase or make your own graduation cake, try making some cupcakes in your school colors to celebrate instead!

    Inexpensive Graduation Party Activities

Music is always a must at graduation parties! Create your own custom playlist, and turn up your iTunes or iHome to celebrate. If you do not have the time to customize your own graduation celebration soundtrack, use websites like Pandora or Spotify to access millions of songs and playlists without all of the effort. Other entertaining options for graduation parties include karaoke or wii games. If your party is outside, make sure to have some recreational activities available such as swimming, volleyball, softball, basketball, horseshoes, or bocce ball.

Remember, a high school graduation party is to celebrate your great accomplishment with friends and family. Using our inexpensive graduation party ideas to create the perfect graduation party will ensure your day is memorable and affordable. This may be one of your last times seeing all of your friends and family together for a while, so be sure to enjoy it!

Live DormSmart

Personalized High School Graduation Gifts = College Trunks and Footlockers

Customize a college trunk for your high school graduate with removable wheels, a hardwood tray, and a nameplate at DormSmart.com!

Gift cards for high school graduation just got a makeover… Get the Dorm411!

By Megan Leslie, University of Arkansas - Sam Walton College of Business
Co-founding Student of DormSmart.com and DormSmart Studio Host

Black Swirl Greeting and Gift Card Set

Not sure what to give your college bound student as a high school graduation gift? You miss your family and friends from home, and your college friends seem to have all disappeared after finals. What is there to do in this ghost town? Relax! Regardless of your reason for staying on campus this summer (i.e., taking classes, working, or being involved in an extracurricular activity), there are plenty of affordable ideas to keep yourself entertained and to make your summer a memorable one.

1. Get Adventurous

Be a tourist in your college city. Attend a local athletic event. Seek out the local attractions such as the zoo, museums, parks, restaurants, shops, and historical landmarks.

2. Get Ahead

Use your spare time this summer to your advantage when it comes to your studies. Prepare for next semester by buying or renting your books early, reading ahead, organizing your materials for each class, and perfecting your schedule.

3. Get Involved

Community service is a rewarding way to spend some of your extra time this summer. Not to mention, you will be fulfilling some volunteer hours. Consider getting involved with Habitat for Humanity, a local hospital, or even an animal shelter. Contact your student resource center for more information.

4. Get Active

It's summer time! There are always plenty of great activities to do outside such as playing Frisbee, running, hiking, biking, swimming, visiting a local park, or even joining a recreational league softball team for the summer. Consider starting a new workout routine at your school gym!

5. Get Sociable

Chances are that you are not the only student staying on campus this summer. If none of your friends are on campus, get to know some of your fellow summer residents. Invite them to a night out together. Host a game or movie night. Plan a scavenger hunt. Make plans with your fellow residents for the fourth of July!

These are only a few examples of what you can do to make your summer fun-filled and exciting. So...Start enjoying your summer and live Dorm Smart!

Will Jersey Cotton Twin Sheets Fit A Twin Extra Long Mattress or Vice Versa? text-align: left;">

About Comfy Jersey Cotton Sheets

While super comfy, there can be a few problems with cheaply made jersey cotton sheets or any cheap sheet for that matter! Just like a comfy tee shirt, after repeated washing and drying in the campus commercial machines, they may experience some shrinkage, bunch up, or become misshapen so trying to stretch a cheaply made twin jersey cotton sheet over your twin extra long mattress may prove to be problematic after repeated laundering. Not to mention, when they bunch up, it makes for an uncomfortable night's sleep. Many manufacturers of jersey cotton sheets recommend that they be washed in cold water to avoid shrinkage. Unfortunately, this is not the most hygienic approach for college students living in close quarters nor is it the best approach for students who suffer from allergies. Most allergy sufferers are advised to wash bedding frequently in HOT water to help reduce allergens; making for a better night's sleep.

If you are planning to use jersey cotton sheets on your dorm room bed, be sure to purchase a quality set that can withstand repeated laundering in commercial machines and is guaranteed not to bunch up, shrink, or lose their shape after repeated washings.

How Students Can Avoid Improperly Fitted Dorm Bed Sheets

Regardless of the type of fabric a college student chooses for their dorm bed sheets (i.e. comfy jersey cotton, wrinkle resistant cool poly cotton blend, or cozy Egyptian cotton…), it is important for students to:

ALWAYS check with their campus housing office to obtain the mattress dimensions in their college dorm room before shopping for bed sheets. From DormSmart's research of more than 2000 housing websites annually, we've noticed a disconnect when it comes to standardized "bed size" terms. In other words, your school may post sheets for a twin size bed when in fact the mattress dimensions are 39" x 80", requiring twin extra long sheets so verify the actual mattress dimensions.

BEWARE of retailers who state or imply that all college dorm rooms have twin extra long mattresses when in fact some colleges provide beds with twin mattresses, some provide twin extra long mattresses, and some provide both. Obviously, that retailer has not done their homework. Even if the retailer offers a guarantee to fit, be sure to check their refund policy and guarantee. It may not be worth your while monetarily to return a cheap set of jersey cotton sheets. I suspect the retailer knows this fact. The thing about unsuspecting incoming freshman... there are always new ones to tap into the next school year.

PURCHASE quality fitted sheets that are made to fit the mattress in their dorm room. Meaning if students have a standard twin mattress in their dorm room, their fitted sheet MUST BE manufactured to fit a standard twin mattress (typically 39" x 75") to ensure a proper fit. If a student's dorm mattress is twin extra long in size, their fitted sheet MUST BE made to fit an extra long twin mattress (typically 39" x 80"). There is almost a half of a foot difference in length between a twin and twin extra long mattress. Obviously, a twin extra long fitted sheet will cover a smaller mattress. However, if you don't want to take a chance on remaking your bed in the middle of the night or when your using it as extra dorm seating during the day then you'll want to invest in the right size fitted sheets.

Good News For Parents & Students

If your school has both twin and twin extra long mattresses on their dorm room beds and you find your bed mattress size changes each school year, you only need to replace your fitted sheet. Your flat sheet and pillow case will work on either size bed.

So live dorm smart… always buy the right size fitted sheet for your dorm bed mattress to ensure a proper fit and a good night’s sleep to make your grades!

eHow Home Related Article: About Jersey Knit Sheet Sets
Bedding Ensembles Central Related Article: Jersey Sheets

What is it like to live in a freshman residence hall and dorm room?

Answered By Megan Leslie, University of Arkansas - Sam Walton College of Business
Co-founding Student of DormSmart.com
DormSmart Q&A

Moving away from home and transitioning into college life can be both exciting and intimidating, especially when it comes to moving into a tiny dorm room in a freshman residence hall. All residence halls have their own unique way of life and set of rules so when you are choosing your housing preferences, be sure to get a little background information about where you would be living to make the best choice for you. Just remember to…

Expect Challenges

Living in a residence hall comes with challenges, the worst being noise and space! So learning to deal with noisy neighbors, crowded bathrooms, and sharing a small dorm room with a stranger are all realistic challenges for an incoming freshman. Sometimes you just need to DEAL and other times noise canceling headphones can be your best friend. Seriously!

Be a Team Player

Most residence halls meet to create a list of rules that everyone is expected to follow, so be sure to participate and voice your concerns at these hall meetings.

Get to Know Your RA

RAs exist not only to make sure that you are following the rules but to unite your hall and help ease your transition into dorm life.

Get to Know Your Fellow Hall Mates

Residence halls often provide hall activities so that those who live there can mingle and spend time together. Making the effort to get to know your fellow hall mates can lead to great friendships and a good support system for college.

While the prospect of living on campus in a freshman residence hall with total strangers may seem intimidating right now, at the end of the day, it will prove to be one of your most exciting experiences yet.

Live Dorm Smart!

Choosing Between An Old Friend Or Someone New As A College Roomie... Get the Dorm 411!

By Megan Leslie, University of Arkansas - Sam Walton College of Business
Co-founding Student of DormSmart.com

Let’s face it. One of the biggest adjustments you will make when moving to college is moving into a residence hall. Unfortunately, most dorm rooms in freshman residence halls do not feature glamorous apartment style living where you have your own bedroom and personal space. In all likelihood, you will be sharing a cramped room, smaller than your bedroom at home, with at least one roommate. While the prospect of doing this with a complete stranger seems terrifying, making the decision to room with an old friend can be a far worse experience.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing between an old friend or someone new as a college roomie:

Life Experience

One of the benefits of attending college, other than getting an education of course, is gaining new life experiences. Learning to live with someone new at college is exactly that… a new life experience! It’s also a great way to branch out and meet new people of varying backgrounds, expanding your horizons.

Personality Traits

Choosing to room with a friend can put a lot of stress on a relationship. Just because you get along well with your friend at school or when hanging out does not mean that you can live together in harmony. Maybe you admire that your friend is the spontaneous one who could care less about what others think while you are the clean and responsible one. This could translate into your trying to adjust to a disorganized roommate when you need organization to make good grades. Spontaneity may be something you need in small doses. So to save your friendship you may want to take advantage of your school’s housing tools to find a roomie with similar personality traits that will translate into a well organized and clean living space for you.

Setting Boundaries

The idea of moving into your dorm room with a stranger can be intimidating, especially the first time you do it! The idea of rooming with an old friend may seem more comfortable because they are like family. Speaking of family… remember those times at home when you fought with a sibling over clothing or when your mom got mad at you for taking her hairspray? When you have a new roomie, you’re not as comfortable borrowing their things without permission. It’s much easier to set clear boundaries when living with someone new. And if it doesn’t work out with your new roomie, it won’t cost you an old friend.

Regardless of whom you choose to room with at college, be sure that you have agreeable personalities and can set clear boundaries.

Live Dorm Smart!

Dorm Laundry Tip: Make laundry a little easier at college... Get the Dorm 411!

By Christi Leslie, Founder & CEO of DormSmart.com
Creator of Dorm411.com

Make laundry a little easier for yourself while you are away at college:

Set a schedule to do laundry. It's best to select a time when your campus laundry isn’t the busiest. If possible coordinate with a roommate or friend to make doing laundry a little less boring.

Stock up on laundry supplies. The chore takes a whole lot longer when you have to run out to the store on laundry day to pick up supplies.

Invest in a laundry backpack, bag, or unit with a sorter to keep your laundry sorted throughout the week.

Treat stains as they occur so you don’t have to spend hours trying to get a stain out or make costly replacements.

Stay with your laundry or set an alarm five minutes prior to your machine cycle end. Otherwise, your laundry may go missing.

Fold, hang, and put away your laundry right away to stay organized throughout the week.

Live Dorm Smart!

Quirkiest Campus Housing Rules 2012… Get the Dorm 411

By Megan Leslie, University of Arkansas - Sam Walton College of Business
Co-founding Student of DormSmart.com

Over the past year, I participated on a project team at DormSmart.com, responsible for developing and implementing their new Campus Housing Connector for college bound students. This tool allows students to connect directly to their campus housing office and get "their 411" (i.e. what to bring and what not to bring...) before shopping for dorm room supplies. During the course of the project, the team reviewed more than 2000 college housing websites nationwide and as a result, came across some pretty "QUIRKY” housing rules that may leave students and parents feeling a little confused or wondering what the... happened on that campus. Seriously, what’s up with that school?

Here are a few of my personal favorites…

Campus Housing Rule #1
Your refrigerator must not exceed hip height.

“Really? Whose hip? Mine, my two year old nephew's, or Shaq’s?”

Campus Housing Rule #2
No firearms are permitted in the residence halls except during hunting season.

“I am at a loss for words on this one. Somehow knowing that ammunition is not allowed in the residence halls doesn't give me much comfort.”

Campus Housing Rule #3
Students are permitted one primarily caged, non-venomous pet per room.

“So, whose pet got loose? What was it? And most importantly, did they catch it? How big can my cage be? Can I bring my boa constrictor?"

Campus Housing Rule #4
Pets are not permitted in the residence halls with the exception of freshwater, non-flesh eating varieties.

“That’s a relief! I can bring my pet duck.”

Campus Housing Rule #5
Residents can bring in personal furniture, except for water beds, mattresses, bed frames, box springs and loft kits, as long as it sufficiently fits in the room in which it is placed, is not seen as a safety hazard, and all roommates are in agreement with it.

“Huh?”

Campus Housing Rule #6
Alcohol is not permitted in the residence halls unless it is during an official, school-sponsored party.

“What constitutes a school sponsored party? My parents would freak!”

Campus Housing Rule #7
No livestock is permitted in campus buildings.

“I’m wondering whose live mascot they stole and how they got it past the RA?”

   Campus Housing Rule #8
You must attend all hall meetings fully clothed.

“As opposed to…”

All kidding aside, while some of these rules may seem a little out there, the overwhelming majority are spot on. Regardless, it is important to remember that you must follow ALL of your campus housing rules and regulations.

Live Dorm Smart!

Need To Know What To Bring & What NOT To Bring To Your College Campus... Plan A Staycation… Get the Dorm 411!

By Megan Leslie, University of Arkansas - Sam Walton College of Business
Co-founding Student of DormSmart.com

Not every college student can afford a trip over spring break, which may mean staying on campus. Instead of stressing about it or feeling left out, be proactive and plan a staycation! There are plenty of things you can do to create an affordable, fun-filled, and relaxing Spring Break Staycation on and around your college campus.

1. Be a Tourist

You may be surprised by all of the interesting places you have yet to see in your college town (i.e. zoo, museums, parks, and historical landmarks…). Take this time to explore and learn more about your new home as a tourist.

2. Evening Out with Fellow Staycationers

Staying on campus over spring break does not mean that you cannot go out and have some fun. Check out that new movie you’ve wanted to see or eat at that local café that you have wanted to try for some time now.

3. Be a Fan

Go out and support your college team! If there are no home games scheduled over spring break, see if there are any minor league games taking place in the city. If whether permits, maybe tailgate before the game.

4. Movie Night or Game Night

If you do not feel like going out, try hosting a movie or game night for fellow staycationers in your residence hall. It is a fun and inexpensive way to spend an evening getting to know new people!

5. Local Happenings

Most colleges have a resource center that works to connect students with their surrounding city by keeping them informed about local happenings. Stop by your school resource center to get connected to local events taking place in your college town over spring break.

6. Holiday Celebrations

If your spring break happens to fall over the holiday, you can plan a celebration with your fellow staycationers. Everyone can bring food and introduce their holiday traditions. This is a great way to experience other cultures and expand your horizons without leaving campus.

7. Scavenger Hunts

Planning your own scavenger hunt is a great way for staycationers to get out and explore. Whether on campus or throughout the surrounding city, the search will keep you and your new friends entertained for hours!

8. Community Service

With all of this extra time on your hands, it may be a great time to get in some volunteer hours. Contact your student resource center to learn about local volunteer opportunities available over spring break such as Habitat for Humanity or at a local animal shelter. You and your friends will have fun meeting new people all while helping those in need.

9. Fun in the Sun

Some great activities for staycationers in warm weather include going to the park, playing frisbee, getting a team together for a softball game, going hiking, going biking, or even swimming.

10. Get Ahead of the Class

Once you have relaxed, use the remaining day or two of spring break staycation to get ahead in all of your classes. Read ahead, work on those final essays, study for your midterms, or spend time working on upcoming projects. When school starts back up, you will be relieved that you accomplished so much and did not procrastinate!

So go ahead … enjoy your Spring Break Staycation and live Dorm Smart!

High School Graduation Is Fast Approaching – RU Ready For Your Move to College? Get The Dorm 411!

By Christi Leslie, Founder & CEO DormSmart.com
Creator of Dorm411.com

It's Spring, and all you can think about is the warm weather, spring break, the prom, finals, and high school graduation! With all the excitement buzzing around you, it can be difficult to focus on your impending move to college.

At some point over the next months, many of you will find mom or dad, maybe both, nagging you about preparing for your move to college. Just remember, this is a huge transition for both you and your parents so it is important to handle it appropriately so that you are prepared to be successful at school.

To help you get started, here are 3 tips to make preparing for a move into your college dorms easier:

Tip 1: Plan Ahead.

Do not procrastinate! It is important to plan ahead so that you can pace yourself... do a little at a time. For example, you can contact your housing office in advance to find out what to bring to campus on move in day and the dimensions of your dorm room to make shopping and packing for college easier.

Tip 2: Set Aside Time.

Schedule time each week to work with your parents on your move to college. This means no texting or distractions. Focus on what needs to be done during your scheduled time such as going through your room at home, coordinating with your college roommate, shopping for your dorm supplies, and packing… then you can have some fun with your friends.

Tip 3: Have Fun.

Designing and decorating your dorm room should be fun. To make life a little easier for yourself, consider creating a quick “To Do List” a week in advance to prepare for your trip home (i.e. prepare your dorm room, packing list, return books, take care of pets…).

Tip #2 Only Pack the Essentials

If traveling home by airplane, only pack the essentials. Most airlines impose hefty fees for additional luggage and overweight baggage.

If carpooling home, remember you have to share the storage space in your vehicle with other students. Depending on the size of the ride and number of passengers, storage space may be limited.

If driving home on your own, remember YOU have to pack and haul everything from your dorm room to your car. Even worse, when you return to campus, YOU have to unpack and haul everything back into your dorm room.

Hint: This may be a great time to invest in a few space saving storage bags to make packing for visits home from college more manageable.

Tip #3 Pack Seasonal Items – Save Dorm Space

If you do have the space in your vehicle, take advantage of it and pack seasonal items you no longer need to create additional space in your dorm room. There will also be less to pack when you return home (move out of your dorm room) for summer break.

Tip #4 Mom

Whether preparing to travel home from college via airplane, carpool, or driving yourself… keep in mind that mom probably has purchased everything you’ll need in anticipation of your visit. If you are unsure about what to pack for a visit home from college, mom is just a phone call or text message away.

As always, live dorm smart!

Home From College But Where's My Bedroom? Get the Dorm 411!

By Christi Leslie, Founder & CEO of DormSmart.com
Creator of Dorm411.com

When you head home from college during break, don’t be surprised if there have been some big changes at home, including your bedroom, read on...

Home From College But Where's My Bedroom?

When my eldest daughter, Jamie, left for Radford University she told me repeatedly that she was not planning to come home for school breaks. She wanted to travel on spring break with friends and in the summers take on different jobs, maybe by the beach. As a first time parent of a college bound freshman, initially I tried to hang on tight and force her home, unsuccessfully!

Feeling the loss one afternoon, shortly after Jamie’s birthday, I could no longer bear to look at her empty room so I packed up and stored her things, moved her youngest sister into her bedroom... then turned her sister’s room into a personal space for myself. When Jamie finally came home, she felt a little lost and betrayed, as if she didn’t belong anymore. So here is my advice for both students and parents…

Advice for College Bound Freshman

When you leave for college, remember mom and dad may initially feel a little lost. After all, just 24 hours before dropping you off in your campus dorm room far away from home your mom may have had to help you find a missing article of clothing you just had to take to campus while dad probably loaded all your stuff into the car. Just imagine how scary it must feel for your parents to leave you on campus alone. So while you may be feeling that new found independence of a college freshman, don’t pull a “Jamie” and repeatedly tell your parents you are never coming home to live again. While you may not intend it to be hurtful, it does sting a little. To this day, Jamie and I laugh about it because she has moved home on more than one occasion since leaving for college.

If you do come home for summer break to find your bedroom has been turned into an art or photography studio, try not to take it personally. Maybe mom just needed to make changes to help her adjust to your leaving the nest. If your old room means that much to you and you feel robbed of your space, talk to your mom about how you are feeling but keep in mind that you are an adult now and will soon be moving from your dorm room into your first place so does it really matter where you sleep if it helps mom let go?

Advice for Parents of College Bound Freshman

When your student leaves for college, especially your first born, it can be heart wrenching. While you may feel excited for them, you may also feel a sense of loss. Those feelings should pass in time and be replaced with a new found independence of your own, meaning you have a little more time to pursue your own interests. If those interests require the use of your student’s bedroom you may want to ease them into the transition… Don’t let your student come home from college for summer break and be surprised by the changes, work it out ahead of time. Just remember, most of us felt a sense of loss when our childhood bedroom was no longer ours… it’s a natural progression.

Good luck to your entire family this coming school year and remember to live dorm smart!

My Residence Hall Community Bathroom Gets So Disgusting Between Scheduled Cleanings… What Can I Do To Clean It Up? Get the Dorm 411!

DormSmart Q&A Answered by Christi Leslie, Creator of Dorm411.com
and Megan Leslie, University of Arkansas - Sam Walton College of Business

Many colleges such as the University of Michigan provide housing custodians to clean and disinfect residence hall common areas daily such as kitchens, lounges, and community bathrooms. If this is the case with your college, it may be a staffing issue that your resident advisor needs to address with housing officials.

My Community Bathroom Gets So Dirty...
It's Gross!

If your residence hall community bathroom is not cleaned daily, ask your RA to speak with your college housing officials about increasing the frequency of cleanings. If budget becomes an issue invite housing officials to your next residence hall meeting… be prepared to take a proactive stance, show housing officials how cleaning the community bathrooms more frequently benefits the college. For example, the overall cost may not increase because the bathroom does not take as long to clean or overall maintenance and remodeling costs may decrease because more frequent cleaning extends the life of the facility.

If more frequent cleaning is not an option for your community bathroom, ask your RA to schedule a mandatory meeting to brainstorm possible solutions with students living in your residence hall.

For example, consider:

Posting creative signs that encourage students to keep the community showers clean (i.e., While it’s important to wash your mane, don’t let it clog the shower drain or Remove your stray hairs from the shower or we will all be waiting on maintenance for hours…).

Creating a reward system or contests to inspire residents to help maintain the property. With the proper approach, you may be able to convince retailers, restaurants, even concert promoters to donate prizes in exchange for the free publicity… make it count!

Just remember the meeting should be positive not negative so no whining, complaining, or finger pointing allowed… ONLY SOLUTIONS for keeping your community bathroom clean.

Live Dorm Smart!

Underbed Storage Trunks Option For College Students ... It made me chuckle because they used the word kid which would send my student off the deep end. The author then proceeded to generalize about college students and universities as if they are all the same. I think the author's intent was to caution parents about overspending on dorm room supplies and encourage them to save space. I agree, parents and students need to be practical. That's why at DormSmart, we always tell students to make their checklist... shop at home first then go shopping.

Unfortunately, the author seemed so focused on short-term cost savings that they overlooked an important point... a dorm room is a student's first step toward independent living so it needs to be their home away from home. Their dorm room should create an environment that promotes student success and makes the transition to college life easier. After all, college is a huge investment and we want to do everything we can as parents to protect that investment, ensure our student's success. Let's face it, we won't save money if our student fails to adjust and has to repeat classes.

As a parent and specialty retailer, I found a good portion of the author's advice to be impractical for college bound students. Read on..."

Impractical: No college student irons clothes so don't bring an iron, use the dryer touch up button...

Really? My daughter is a business major and some activities actually require ironing. Her friend is ROTC and wears uniforms that must be pressed. When your student is 12 hours from home, it may be a little difficult to iron their clothes for them. So if your student needs to iron, you are better off packing a 1200 watt (or less) 3-way auto shutoff iron and a dorm size ironing surface that is safe and easily stored. As for suggesting students use the touch up/wrinkle free option on their dryer. Actually, I don't think commercial dryers in the dorm laundry rooms have a wrinkle free option and it certainly is not FREE, especially over four years!

Impractical: Most dorms supply perfectly good desk chairs so don't waste your money on furniture...

It really depends on the school. When we moved our daughter into her dorm room, we secretly went up and down the halls of her residence hall, room by room, trying to locate two desk chairs that were still intact for her and her roommate. Afterwards, we spent days trying to find the right cushion to make it more comfortable. Bottom line, don't assume the furniture provided by the university will be right for your student. You know your student better than anyone. Do they need a comfortable chair?

Impractical: If you find your student cannot live without a coffeemaker allow them to plunder your kitchen appliances during Christmas break...

NEVER send your student to school with your regular size kitchen appliances (i.e. 12 cup coffeemaker). Pack dorm size appliances that auto shutoff, contain no hot plates, operate on a standard 110/120v plug, and are UL or ETL listed. And because regulations vary from school to school, always check with the university housing office before investing in any appliance.

Impractical: Send your old television to school with your student or give them their uncle's old tube television...

Isn't that like sending your student to their dorm room with an old mainframe computer instead of a laptop? A dorm room is a small space so electronics need to be dorm sized. I purchased an inexpensive 15" LCD/DVD television for my daughter and it fit perfectly in her small dorm room. Bottom line, sending your student with an old tube television is not a good space saving idea at all. If you are concerned about theft or accidental damage, consider purchasing student property insurance. It is relatively inexpensive.

Impractical: College trunks are out of vogue because they do not fill a purpose...

College trunks have changed a lot and are more popular than ever. They come in many shapes and sizes to fit in the smallest of dorm rooms while providing a wealth of storage space. College trunks are also available with options such as easy glide removable wheels and locking systems to secure a student's laptop, phone, and food... Additionally, a good quality trunk can be multi purposed, used as a night stand or extra dorm room seating and storage.

Impractical: Matchy matchy dorm bedding is too pricey. Save money, just pack the bare essentials...

Because a good night's sleep is a must have for college students and we are yet to visit a college campus with a comfortable dorm room bed, parents should consider investing in a comfortable mattress topper and bedding. In addition, many dorm room beds are twin XL in size, longer than the standard twin bed found at home so your twin fitted sheet from home will not fit a twin XL bed.

Bottom line... if you find yourself shopping for comfortable bedding to fit your student's twin XL bed properly, take the opportunity to brighten up their bland dorm room and chase away those freshman blues. As for pricey, there are many affordable quality bedding options for students in today's dorm supplies marketplace, including duvet sets (much easier and cheaper to launder than the typical comforter set). If your student can find affordable bedding (dorm decor) that makes their dorm room look like Pottery Barn then good for them. After all, it is their first home away from home!

Good luck getting your student off to college! Get the Dorm 411!

By Megan Paige Leslie, University of Arkansas Sam Walton College of Business
Co-founding Student DormSmart.com

"...I was so excited my freshman year of college. I could not wait to move into my dorm room, meet new people, and have new experiences. Surprisingly, all of this newfound freedom left me feeling a little lost. As a result, I made a few common freshman mistakes along the way..."

1. Getting involved with the older coeds…

Somehow I thought I needed to be a part of the in crowd. Of course, at that time, I was a freshman at Tulane University… far from home and the comfort of my family and childhood friends. Being insecure in my newfound freedom, I thought it was so cool being one of the only freshmen invited to their parties. My advice for incoming freshman is to be yourself, and the right friends will surface in process.
2. Getting involved in a romantic relationship…

The right relationships can be fun. It is nice to go out, meet new people, and experience new things. However, college is a time of self discovery so getting involved too soon in a serious romantic relationship can completely derail you, both personally and professionally. Enjoy the college experience.
3. Not taking campus safety seriously…

One of my biggest mistakes and the hardest to share with readers… I felt invincible, like it couldn’t happen to me… I was wrong. I trusted a friend. I went to his dorm room to study alone and became a victim. BIG MISTAKE! Always take precautions on and off campus. For example, only study and travel in groups, carry personal safety products approved for your campus, lock you dorm door even when you are there, and don’t allow yourself to become impaired by alcohol. Live smart, and stay safe!
4. Failing to balance…

One of the hardest things for most college students their freshman year, myself included, is learning to balance personal activities, classes, and study time. College is a balancing act that must be performed throughout life, so it is the perfect opportunity to master this skill. Classes are only a semester or quarter long, so do not procrastinate when it comes to studying. Once you are behind, it is almost impossible to catch up. If you’ve been skipping classes, your professor will not be sympathetic. Bottom line, while it is important to set a schedule for personal activities to alleviate stress and create a sense of belonging, it is equally important to attend class and study consistently. Balance!
5. Failing to take care of my health…

Freshman year, I was all about working out, rock hard abs. However, between going out, pulling all nighters, and failing to maintain a healthy diet, I got sick a lot! As a result of my lifestyle, I struggled to maintain my grades. As an honor student on a full ride academic scholarship at one of the top 50 business schools in the country, failing to eat properly and get enough sleep were not my smartest choices.
In hindsight, all of the mistakes that I made my freshman year came from a place of insecurity, leaving the comforts of home and my childhood friends to embark upon a new adventure. Oddly enough, I grew up with a strong sense of self; so it surprised me, my friends, and my family. Trust in yourself. Don’t lose sight of who you are throughout your freshman year. If you have already started making these mistakes, just remember… it is never too late to make changes and redeem yourself.

Live Dorm Smart,

-Megan

Happy Holidays From DormSmart.com...
